Tour 7.8

7 days/6 nights: “High Atlas and the southern atlantic coast”

Day 1: Marrakesh – Imlil (day trek)
We leave the riad in Marrakesh in the morning. Our journey takes us south, towards the High Atlas range and its highest peak Toubkal (4160 metres). We’ll be crossing the plain of Marrakesh, with its scatterings of orchards and olive groves, pine forests and walnut trees, before the road becomes increasingly steep and narrow as it leads on to Imlil, a small Berber village on the slope of a mountain. From here, we set out on our trek to explore the fascinating nature and mountains of the High Atlas range. The walk lasts around 5 hours. Packed lunch and overnight accommodation in a hotel in Imlil.
Day 2: Imlil – Tizn Test Pass (2,093 m) – Taroudant
After breakfast in the hotel, we resume our journey to the south, crossing the High Atlas range and the Pass of Tizn-Test (2093 m). Our route takes us through splendid woods of oleanders, pine and oak trees, and Berber villages where the houses are made of mud. After crossing the pass, we head down towards the green valley of Sous, an important agricultural centre. Here, the vegetation changes, and the landscape is dominated by lavender, juniper and argan trees. We reach Taroudant, with its olive groves, orchards and vineyards, surrounded by a high clay wall reminiscent of the walls of Marrakesh. We tour the Medina and souk, before dinner and overnight accommodation in a hotel.
Day 3: Taroudant – Tafraout – Ammeln Valley
After breakfast in the hotel, we head for Tafraout, an oasis of date palms located on a plateau. The main landscape feature around Tafraout is a series of bizarre granite formations, which help make it one of the most beautiful regions in the country. In the afternoon, we take a look around the splendid valley of Ammeln, with its picturesque villages and fantastic painted rocks and rock etchings. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a hotel.
Day 4: Tafraout – Tiznit – Sidi Ifni – Guelmim – Tan-Tan Beach
After breakfast in the hotel, we resume our journey to the south. Today’s route takes us through argan woods and almond groves, cacti and euphorbia, until we reach the typical desert town of Tiznit. We continue along the Atlantic coast to Guelmim and Tan-Tan, further south. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a hotel.
Day 5: Tan-Tan – Guelmim (overnight accommodation in a tent in the oasis)
After breakfast in the hotel, we continue along the white beaches of the Atlantic coast (La Plage Blanche) to the palm oasis of Tighmert, a typical village inhabited by the Saharawi desert nomads. We’ll be spending the night in a tent in this oasis, with its gardens and crops of wheat, barley and medicinal herbs. There’s no better way to immerse yourself in the natural landscape and experience the way of life of the inhabitants of this fantastic place. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a tent.
Day 6: Guelmim – Agadir – Essaouira
After our night in the oasis and breakfast in our tented camp, we continue along the Atlantic coast to Agadir and Essaouira, the picturesque town on the Atlantic Ocean. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a riad in the medina.
Day 7 : Essaouira -Marrakesh
After breakfast, we’ll have time to visit the beautiful down of Essaouira, on the Atlantic Ocean, a destination rich in charm and fascination. Among its attractions are the fish market and harbour, with the small fishing vessels which bring the fresh fish and all the abundance of the Atlantic to the land. The ancient fortifications, ramparts and, above all, the imposing medina, which was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2001, are unforgettable sights. As we walk the narrow lanes of the medina, we can admire the picturesque white houses with blue doors and window frames and the many shops and cafes. After lunch, we return to Marrakesh.
